Saint Luke's Parish Notes - May 13, 2012

Parish NotesMay 13, 2012

What’s happening…

Our Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) will not meet today. Spend the day with your mothers!

A Newcomers/Inquirer’s/Confirmation Class begins today. This class will meet each Sunday May 13 and 20th and each Sunday in June in the Saint Luke’s Library at 9:15 a.m. In this course we’ll discuss the Sacraments and their meanings, church history, along with the origins of the Episcopal Church, the way that we approach this Christian faith of ours, and what difference it makes to you. Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be new!

Saints Alive! will be May 19 at the home of Phil and Peggy Bogard, 79 Woodmanor Place, Jackson, at 6:30 p.m. What in the world is Saints Alive? At Saint Luke’s, Saints Alive is a large gathering of adults from the parish for food, fellowship, and fun with no other agenda. If you are new to Saint Luke’s, this is a great way to meet others
in the parish.
Please bring your favorite covered dish and join us for an evening of Christian fellowship.

The Rt. Rev. Don E. Johnson, Bishop of West Tennessee, will be here Sunday, May 27th for the baptism of Cormac Ferrell. Also we will celebrate with Broderick Greer his forthcoming entrance to seminary on this day. There will be a reception for the Ferrells and for Broderick in the Parish Hall following the 10:30 a.m. service. We hope you will all join the celebration.

Baptism Dates Ahead. The Book of Common Prayer recommends five dates for Baptisms… The Great Vigil of Easter, Pentecost Sunday, All Saints’ Day, The Baptism of Jesus, and when the Bishop visits. Other dates may be scheduled, but these dates bear special significance to Baptism on our calendar. The next services that will include Holy Baptisms will be the Day of Pentecost, May 27, 2012. Please contact the Parish Office if you have someone to be Baptized.

Pictorial Directory - The process of developing our new Saint Luke’s pictorial directory has begun! We hope everyone (even if you’re new to Saint Luke’s) is making plans to have their photo taken. Mike Booher, photographer, along with his "assistants" Vikki Neblett and Dusty Morris, promise to make the process quick and painless. Just meet them in the Commons between services or after 10:30 service on May 13th or 20th to begin the process.  We will even give you a free digital copy of the photo if you would like.  You may print as many copies as you like, in any size, and no one will pressure you to buy anything! If for some reason you are unable to have your photo taken during one of these scheduled times, there are other options.  You may email a recent photo to stlukes@estlukes.org, or send us one on a CD.  (If it is a professional photo, we need a release from your photographer to print it in the new directory.)   We can also make arrangements for taking your photo on another day if necessary.  We want everyone to be included in this directory!  Contact Lynn White (whites575@aeneas.net) if you need to make other arrangements. We look forward to snapping your photo, and putting together a pictorial directory to strengthen our parish community and to help us all “put a name with a face”.

Christian Education for Adults…

The Tuesday evening Bible study led by Gene Davenport meets each week at 7:00 p.m. We are now studying 1 Corinthians, Chapter 8 and all of you are invited. The class is in discussion formant and is not a lecture.

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study led by Dr. Brady Whitehead meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in the Saint Luke’s library. Everyone is welcome.

The Upper Room Class will go on summer hiatus after May 20. There will be no adult Sunday school starting the weekend of Memorial Day. We will resume on Rally Day in the fall, when we will begin a study of comparative religions. Our study will be centered on Huston Smith’s book, The Worlds Religions.
