Parish Notes, December 4, 2011

December 4, 2011

Special Events…

EYC will meet today at the church at 5:00 p.m..

We are still accepting pledge cards. You may place your cards in the alms basin, mail it to the parish office, or turn in online online at www.estlukes.org/pledge.htm.

Sung Compline Mondays in Advent (Nov. 28 – Dec. 19). Saint Luke’s will be offering an additional service of Compline each week to assist your devotion as we wait and prepare for the coming of Christ. On Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. throughout the season of Advent we’ll gather to sing the service of Compline, a service of night prayer from our Prayer Book. The service of Compline is quiet, meditative, and prayerful, and is a great way to step back from the hustle and bustle of the season. The service will last for all of 25 minutes with time before and after for prayer and reflection. You can come and sing or simply sit and pray along.

This year’s Angel Tree is in the narthex. We have adopted 50 angels through the Carl Perkins Child Abuse Center. The information about each child is on the back of the angel. Please be sure to sign the list when you pick up an angel so we will know that child will be provided for. You may also make a donation if you don’t wish to shop and Amy McLean will do the shopping for you! Please place your gifts in the Commons when you bring them and they must be at the church no later than December 8th.

The Annual Saint Nicholas Celebration and parish dinner will be December 7th at 6:15 in the Parish Hall. This is a great, fun event for kids of all ages so mark your calendars and make your plans to attend and bring your Angel Tree gift! Sign up sheets are in the narthex and on the bulletin board by the offices. You may also e-mail us or call the parish office to sign up.

Our Annual Parish Meeting will be next Sunday, December 11th in the Parish Hall. This meeting will include the rector’s annual state of the parish report, committee reports, financial updates and the 2012 budget will be submitted for approval. You will also have the opportunity to vote for four new vestry members so serve a three year term. Please make your plans to attend and be a part of this important meeting.

It is time once again for Christmas flower offering. Please complete the enclosed form and return to the parish office no later than December 11th so your entry will be published in the Christmas bulletin. Please note that late entries may not be printed, depending upon our printing schedule.

New Foyer Groups Begin in January. Foyer groups are an easy and enjoyable way for parishioners to get to know one another – especially newcomers and folks who go to different services – in an informal social setting. Once each month, over a four month period, group members meet at one another’s home or at a restaurant for a simple dinner, to get to know each other.  Each time groups are reassigned to meet new people. Please sign up on the bulletin board by the parish office or contact Bob Beare at 731-444-1000.

Saint Luke’s week to serve at the Community Kitchen will be December 19 -24. Please prayerfully count your blessings and sign up to serve those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. Sign-ups are in the narthex and on the bulletin board or you can call the parish office at 731-424-0556.

Special Holiday Paper Recycling Dates We will be collecting paper both on December the 18th and January the 8th. Please be sure to bring your recycling from gift packaging!

Cookbooks are for sale in the Commons. The price is $20 per cookbook. These would make wonderful Christmas presents for all those cooks on your shopping list!

Christian Education for Adults…

The Tuesday evening Bible study led by Gene Davenport meets each week at 7:00 p.m. We are now studying 1 Corinthians and all of you are invited. The class is in discussion formant and is not a lecture.

The Upper Room Class continues.  Starting November 6, The Upper Room Class began a new series of video lectures on archeological discoveries in the area of Israel and Palestine. We’ll be comparing biblical stories with what the archeological and historic records tell us about the same events. The periods of both the Old and New Testaments will be covered.

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study led by Dr. Brady Whitehead will resume January 4th at 10:00 a.m. in the Saint Luke’s library. Everyone is welcome.

Parish Notes - October 9, 2011

Parish NotesOctober 9, 2011
Special Events…

EYC will meet today at the church at 3:30 p.m.

A Newcomers/Inquirer’s/Confirmation Class continues. This class will meet each Sunday through Nov. 20 in the St. Luke’s Library at 9:15 a.m. In this course we’ll discuss the Sacraments and their meanings, church history, along with the origins of the Episcopal Church, the way that we approach this Christian faith of ours, and what difference it makes to you. Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be new!

Feast of the St. Francis of Assisi with the Blessing of the Animals will be today at 4:00 p.m. in the St. Luke’s Garden. We hope you will make plans to bring your pets and your entire family for this special annual event to celebrate God’s creation of the animals that share our homes our lives and our love. Please be sure that they are properly restrained with leashes or crates to prevent any accidents or escapes! If your pet is just too unwieldy, you are welcome to bring a photo of your pet. Also, we ask that participants bring dog or cat food to be donated to Downtown Dogs, a Jackson pet adoption program. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

We need kitchen help for the ECW Fall Luncheon and Dinner. We will need help with prep work Monday – Thursday and serving help for lunch on Wednesday and dinner on Thursday. If you can help, please contact Susan Francisco at 731-664-9049 and leave message with name, e-mail and a contact number. You are welcome to work when and however long you can.

The Annual ECW Fall Luncheon & Dinner, formerly known as the Calendar Party, will be October 19 & 20. Please be sure to mark your calendars and get your reservations early by calling G. G. Bray at 731-660-5651. This year’s theme is “The Party of Parties”. For those of you new to the church, you will find this a wonderful time for mingling with both St. Luke’s parishioners and with their friends. The food is always wonderful and the decorations are spectacular!

Downtown Jackson Trunk or Treat will be Saturday, Oct. 29th from 1 – 3 p.m. The St. Luke’s EYC will be hosting an activity and handing out treats. The youth participating will need to be here by 12:30 to set up. We’d like to have a couple more “booths” from our church plus we are encouraging members to donate individually wrapped candy or small prizes to be given out at the event. We hope you will bring your children downtown for the event as well. For more information, contact Kiezha Ferrell, ksferrell@gmail.com or 426-5803.

Christian Education for Adults…

The Tuesday evening Bible study led by Gene Davenport meets each week at 7:00 p.m. We are now studying 1 Corinthians and all of you are invited. The class is in discussion formant and is not a lecture.

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study will be delayed. Dr. Brady Whitehead is having hip replacement surgery on September 1st. Please watch for announcements of when the class will resume.
The Upper Room Class continues.  We are reading and discussing Rob Bell's new book "Love Wins."  Subtitled "A book about heaven, hell, and the fate of every person who ever lived," "Love Wins" caused considerable controversy when it came out earlier this year.  Some considered Bell, the founding pastor of the Mars Hill Bible Church, to be espousing a heretical universalist message in his work.  We'll make up our own minds as we explore his work together. Copies of the book are available online at Amazon, or here in Jackson at Books-A-Million.  Join us upstairs between services at 9:15 every Sunday.
